rooted in our COMMUNITY

We’re celebrating our fifth anniversary 🎂🎉 Back in July 2020, we released our first ciders in the midst of a global pandemic and economic shutdown. Since then we’ve kept learning and growing– in many cases overcoming challenges to our original vision. This has meant staying flexible, being resourceful, and always listening to the needs of our community as we look to a sustainable future for our business and environment.

This is our second Sustainability Report, sharing with you some of that learning and curiosity. It captures our evolving understanding of sustainability as something rooted in place. We never take for granted that what we do depends on a healthy environment, diverse rural economy, and strong community bonds.

IMPACT MISSION

  • Support local farms and farmers – offer a new revenue stream and incentivize sustainable farming practices.

  • Partner to enhance vitality of the arts, community and natural landscapes in the Berkshires.

  • Grow awareness of and excitement for craft hard cider in the Berkshires and beyond.

  • Contribute to an inclusive and equitable craft hard cider industry locally, nationally and globally.

To b. Or Not to B.

In 2023, we became a certified B-Corp, joining other companies that balance profit and purpose.

The B-Corp certification process looks across several categories– including environment, employees, governance, community and customers –to evaluate how a company seeks a positive impact through its business model.

At the time, we were one of only two B-Corp in the Berkshires, and one of just 78 B-Corps in Massachusetts.

100% locally sourced
within 100 miles

We love orchards, so we leave the apple growing to talented local farmers. This lets us focus on cidermaking, while supporting a local supply chain with more revenue going back to farms. We primarily source fresh-pressed juice from more than 8 local orchards, supplemented by our experiments with wild foraged and site-specific apples:

  • Local Orchards (within 100 miles) – Supports our local economy and food system.

  • Non-local Orchards – Sourcing varieties that are not currently grown locally.

  • Foraged Apples – Gathered from old orchards, roadsides, and community backyards.

And soon… we’ll pick the first apples from new trees planted in our Cultural Orchard Project – We’re partnering with cultural sites like Hancock Shaker Village, Arrowhead, and Jacob’s Pillow to grow heirloom apple varieties in small orchard blocks, ornamental plantings, or grafting wild apples from these historic Berkshire sites.

reduced our absolute carbon footprint by 4% Since 2021

We measure our Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and have estimated our Scope 3 emissions to get a better sense for our overall impact. We also track what’s called carbon intensity—a way of measuring how much carbon we use to make each gallon of cider or earn each dollar of revenue.

carbon use per gallon is down 5% and our carbon per dollar earned is down 16%

Each year, we donate at least 2% of our revenue to non-profit organizations

Through our employee giving program, we invite our employees to help direct a portion of our giving to organizations that are close to their hearts.

Since 2021, we have donated a total of $4,700 to the Berkshire Food Project, including 20¢ for every pound of apples donated to our Community cider project.
